FRIDAY, Brookings 2 – Bismarck 1
The Brookings Blizzard got their first win of the season on Friday night at the Larson Ice Center against the Bismarck Bobcats with a 2-1 victory.
Eric Brenk’s late game heroics and Drew Weigman’s strong performance in the net lifted the Blizzard past their division rivals.
The Bobcats got on the board first when Stanislav Dzakhov scored just 1:07 into the first period. Brendan Harris was credited with the assist as the Cats took a 1-0 lead.
Later in the first, Jared Goudreau would answer with a power play goal at the 15:02 mark to make it 1-1 going into the first intermission. It was Goudreau’s second goal of the season and second in the last two games. Brandon Parker and Evan Hesse had the assists.
The teams would remain tied 1-1 though the second period where the Blizzard out shot the Bobcats 17-7. The Blizzard would be out shoot the Bobcats 39-28 in the game.
Late in the third period the Blizzard would make one last push toward the Bismarck goal. Forward Russ Jordan carried the puck across the blue line into the Bismarck. After fighting off a check he found Nick DeCenzo who fired a shot toward the net. The puck deflected off a Bismarck skate to the right of the net. Eric Brenk crashed the net and shot the puck from the left faceoff circle, beating the Bismarck goalie with just 10 seconds left on the clock. The Blizzard would hold on for the 2-1 victory, their first of the season.
Weigman would get the win in net with 27 saves.
SATURDAY, Bismarck 3 – Brookings 1
On Saturday the Blizzard hit the road for their first road trip to Bismarck this season.
The teams were tied 0-0 through two periods before Stanislav Dzakhov would get the game’s first goal just 20 seconds into the third period. The Bobcats would go up 2-0 just three minutes later when Nate Repensky scored a power play goal.
The Blizzard would battle back later in the period. Nick DeCenzo would score an unassisted power play goal at the 8:45 mark of the third period to make the score 2-1.
Later in the third period Matt Anders would score for Bismarck and the Bobcats would hold on for a 3-1 victory.
The Blizzard, 1-8-3, host the Aberdeen Wings on Thursday, October 24th at the Larson Ice Center at 7:15pm.
